How to say, "What's this in Russian"?
Hi,
I'm in Kazakhstan at the moment with work and I am trying to speak as much Russian as I can. There is one phrase that would be really useful and that is to be able to say "What is the word for <this> in Russian?" or "How do you say <this> in Russian?"
For example I was trying to ask what the word for glass was yesterday but I could get the girl to understand my question.
As simple as possible so that I am understood please.
Thank you
Andrew

andrewsco is from UK, so it's better to say for him that it's "kah-k".

Of course, we don't know where in the UK Andrew is from, so 'cock' might still be OK. Although, most everybody from the UK knows what an American sounds like, so if you say, "Say 'cock' like an American would", it would probably work. :) Of course, it would probably also sound like a joke, considering the other meaning of the word. :"":

I really wonder where in the UK the pronunciation is like that. :)
(tell me, where it is, and I will never go there :-D )

I really haven't any idea, I was just suggesting the possibility. There's a whole rainbow of different accents in the UK, and some sound quite a lot like American.
To be honest, is the Standard UK and American pronunciation of 'cock' so different? I don't think so.

Aren't they?
Or maybe these examples are not of the standard language: http://www.wordreference.com/definition/cock ?

No, those both sound accurate. It's funny, though, that hearing the words compared side-by-side like that makes them seem more different than I would have expected. I guess when I listen to somebody speak in one of the major native English accents, it just sounds "normal", and the differences don't stand out.

I meant another sentence.
Better for him to say it like "x" would be Ему это лучше произносить как "x" in Russian. What I meant, in Russian would be: Для него лучше сказать, что это прозносится "x". I.e. "It's better if we say for him that it's [kah-k]".

It's better if we tell him to pronounce it like "kah-k."

A: Не знаю, но это вкуснее со сметаной.
