Thread: how does 'дом' decline?

The word 'дом' declines differently.

отведи меня домой

when i use the case system declensions for дом, i dont get the 'ой' ending
instead i get simply дом in accusative.

отведи меня в дом

if it were dative i would try and get:

отведи меня в домy

is there something special about 'домой'?
is it an adverb of some sort?

Yes, it can be an adverb.

You are confusing 2 things.
1. "дом" as a noun is translated into English as "a house" or just "a building" (of any kind). There is another discussion about it: Ah, This Grammar is Making me Insane!

Briefly, the idea is: if you say "отведи меня в дом" (accusative is correct here), it would mean something like "take me into the building"!

2. There are two adverbs: "дома" (at home) - meaning a static location, and "домой" (to home) - meaning direction. They are unchangeable (adverbs do not have cases).
They should be used instead of the noun "дом" when you refer to your own home.

So, "отведи меня домой" is "take me home".

You can also say "отведи меня в мой дом", but "домой" is better.

And some note on pronunciation.

"дома" is the plural form of "дом" (houses, buildings) and pronounced "даМА" (with a stress on the second syllable)
"дома" (at home) is pronounced "ДОма" (with a stress on the first syllable).
So, do not confuse them!

And "домой" is "даМОЙ".
