    to flick

How do you say in Russian "to flick."

For example in the sentence "He flicked a switchblade."

You might want to explain what "he flicked a switchblade" actually means in English!

    = Он выхватил нож.
It means "he got a switchblade very fast [to do something]", usually when a person wants to attack someone.
If you mean that a blade was hidden and then a person pulls the blade out quickly, it could be "он [резко] выкинул лезвие" or "он [резко] щелкнул лезвием".
    For example:
Он выхватил складной нож и резко щелкнул лезвием, мы очень испугались.
Он достал складной нож, выкинул лезвие и перерезал веревку - мы были спасены!

John means flipping up the blade of the switchblade, you do a motion with your hand or finger (usually thumb) for that, "flicking the switchblade", causing the blade to appear.

flick is a rapid motion, often with a snap or other short noise, often using your finger or thumb.

Like "he fished a lighter out of the pocket, flicked it open and ..."

Flick a switchblade is "открыть нож" in my opinion. Also it's "выщёлкивать" -- он выщелкнул лезвие выкидухи...
    Sometimes "щёлкнуть" is already sufficient.
Like "он щёлкнул выкидухой", in an appropriate context it feels right and doesn't need additional elucidation.

I should note that "выкидуха" is a slang word. Especially for Valda.

it's from выкидывать but the stress is on у - выкидуха

выкидать is very rare, comes from выкинуть which comes from выкидывать, as well

Прежде чем вступить в потасуху он схватил выкидуху.
