Thread: Distinguishing between handwritten 'm' and 't'

I am finding this REALLY hard to do. When ever I see a handwritten 't' I alsways read it as an m. for example это when handwritten I read it as 'emo'. Obviously I then think to myself ah, thats a handwritten t!

Does anyone else have this problem, and can anyone suggest how to overcome this? What to look for?

Your problem's that you confuse the English 'm' with the Russian 'т'. A handwritten 'м' in Russian is quite different from that in English. Try to find someone's handwriting on the web. It will surely help you.

I also have some problems with the handwritten 'д' and 'g', 'п' and 'n', 'г' and 'r', and 'р' looks like 'p'.

You just need to practice so you can recognize them without thinking. You could either write lines of words on a piece of paper or type using a handwriting form. Use wordpad and write in italic to switch to the handwiting letters.

I did originally, particularly with the Russian н as you say. I have managed to get my head around that now, its just the smaller handwritten stuff that looks strange to me.

I'm sure it will come eventually.

I have found a section on it in my book which is helping actually.

Well, when I was a child, I wondered why they write "тне" in English every now and then (the text was in all caps).
