    инженер

    Obviously it is engineer. But engineer in Russian seems to be different to engineer in English.

    Could you be a little more specific? As far as I know an engineer in Russian is the same as in English and this is an engineer speaking!

    The only difference I know of is that in Russian engineer can never be used for engine driver.

    I am going to Russia with my university and we are staying with families, and on the list it said what their professions are. And loads of them were инженер and there were a few women инженер too. I thought the meaning might vary from in English.

    Инженер in Russian is a false friend. It sounds like engineer, but it actually means "mafia hitman" Many Russians are engineers. Engineers in the west use their calculators for predvaritelnye raschoti while in Russia they use calculators for okonchatelnye.

    AFAIK, everyone, who has graduated University, automatically becomes engineer. Whey can work in McDonalds later, but, still, they can say what their profession (by Diploma) are "engineer".
    And what meaning this term has at West?

    Not quite. A philologist or a lawyer is not an engineer. In Russian, an engineer is someone who has a higher education AND who majored in some technical discipline, be it construction, aircrafts design, mining etc.

    Инженер can also mean work position, not only a degree of education. My position is инженер-программист, for an instance.

    ST - no, it appears that engineer инженер are the same in R and E with the exception that the Russian one can't be used to mean 'train driver.'

    I oughta know, I are one two.

    Programist = programmer

    In english you say programmer. In Russian, it's programmist.
