Conversation book--урок 1

I just started a Russian conversation book. It's called Let's Talk About Life by Emily Tall and Valentina Vlasikova. There are nine chapters, with a separate topic for each one. There are readings and interviews and some vocabulary and grammar activities around each topic but the focus is on the discussion questions for conversational practice. I still don't have a teacher but I read the articles, etc. and do the activities and then I talk into a recorder to do the best I can with putting together a few simple spontaneous sentences in Russian to answer the discussion questions. Then I listen back to see what gaps I need to fill for vocabulary and the grammar I still don't know well. In the end there are still things I can't figure out on my own. I wonder if someone could read over some of my responses and tell me if they make sense and how to correct them.

The first chapter is titled личная жизнь: семья, любовь, счастье and one of the first questions is just to describe your family. Are these sentences correct? I'm not sure about the use of два/три vs. двое/трое.

У нас трое детей.
У нас двое сыновей и дочь.
У меня трое братьев и сёстер нет.
У меня тоже двое единокровных братьев.
I also want to say, "After 20 years of marriage, they got divorced." This is the best I can do: После того, как они женились 20 лет, они развелись.
What about, "My mother lives near Boston."--Мать живёт под Бостоном.

сестёр - это хитрое слово, в родительном падеже Ё появляется в неожиданном месте

трое братьев а сёстер нет - здесь есть противопоставление, союз А лучше подходит.

Женитьба - это быстрый процесс, 20 лет жениться нельзя. Поэтому:
Прожив 20 лет в браке, они развелись.
Они развелись через 20 лет после того как поженились.

That is grammatically correct, but "У меня трое братьев, а сёстер нет." sounds better.

Также у меня двое единокровных братьев. - Also I have two step-broters. (I have A, also I have B.)

единокровный = from the same father but different mothers.

Here I need to talk a little about education. These are some problems I'm having.

Is this correct for "art history"? Мой любимый предмет в университете история искусства.

What about "art history professor"? В прошлом году в университете мне повезло. У меня была возможность путешествовать в Италию с профессором истории искусста.

What about this sentence? Это самый важный случай моего времини в университете.

Это самый важный случай моего времини в университете.

This one doesn't sound, specifically "случай моего времени"
Possibly "Это самый важный период моей учёбы в университете." (a student says)
or maybe
"Это самое важное событие во время моего пребывания в университете."


I feel here a dash is necessary, where IS is absent:
Мой любимый предмет в университете -- история искусства.

The phrase is ok, but sounds unfinished. So,
a) If the possibility had been implemented, then: "Мне довелось съездить в Италию с профессором истории искусства.
b) If the possibility had been missed, then: "Я упустил возможность съездить в Италию с профессором истории искусства."

The discipline is normally "история искусств". Professor can be "преподаватель" unless he definitely has a Full Professor university position.

These are some difficulties I'm having on questions about a reading passage.

I want to say, "She worked at a boarding school for kids without parents."
Она работала в интернате для детей без родителей. (or?) Она работала в интернате для детей, которые у них родителей нет. (or neither?).

If I want to say, "I'll return to this question" (I can't come up with an answer right now) is it Я вернусь в этот вопрос ?

How about, "She hadn't thought about him in a long time." Она давно не думала о нём ?

"He wanted to thank her for all she had done for him" Он хотел поблагодарить её за всё, которое она делала для его. ?

С точки зрения грамматики, нормальные варианты:
для детей без родителей;
для детей, у которых нет родителей.

Но ребёнок без родителей называется сирота. Так что,
"в интернате для детей-сирот" (можно было бы ещё упростить "в интернате для сирот", но почему-то используется первый вариант).

"I'll return to this question"
Not sure, but maybe "мне надо подумать".

"She hadn't thought about him in a long time."
Yes, Она давно не думала о нём

"He wanted to thank her for all she had done for him"
Он хотел поблагодарить её за всё, что она сделала для него.

A quick question: can нельзя be used in the past or future? I want to say, "Jews were not allowed to work in the government." (This is related to a reading on anti-Semitism).

Нельзя было еврейям работать в государственную службу. Is there a better way to express this? What about in the future, "You won't be allowed to..."

Another question...is this correct? Когда ему не удалось найти работу, она ему помогла. I want to say, "When he couldn't find work, she helped him out."

Zorro: As far as grammar is concerned, нельзя can definitely be used with было or будет to show past or future. However, I'm not 100% sure if it's the best word to use in your example sentence about restrictions on Jews (possibly a stronger term like запрещено, "forbidden," would sound better). But I'd ask the native speakers about the word choice.

P.S. To me, Нельзя было еврейям seems a little ambiguous, and could be interpreted as meaning (for example) that the Jews themselves considered it improper or "unkosher" to work in government jobs. But the actual meaning, of course, is that the government banned Jews from even applying for jobs.

Официального запрещения брать евреев в государственные органы не было и не могло быть, но да, наверное, если и были там евреи, то очень мало. Жену моего двоюродного брата, учительницу немецкого языка в Днепропетровске, неожиданно пригласили работать в КГБ. Просто уговорили согласиться и сразу провели телефон. Правда было это лет 40 назад.
У моей сотрудницы мама лет 40 проработала в КГБ в Киеве.

Yes, in conventional speech we say НЕЛЬЗЯ БЫЛО/НЕЛЬЗЯ БУДЕТ.
In formal situation though, more likely will be chosen different structures.

Past:
Евреям не позволялось работать...
Евреям запрещалось работать...
Евреи не могли работать...
Евреи не допускались к работе...
...

Future:
Вам/тебе не будет позволено ...
Вы/ты не сможете/сможешь ...

работать в государственную службу -> работать на государственной службе (prepositional required)

"не удалось" sounds for me as if he made one attempt and surrendered.
More likely he was seeking for a job for a while. So I would use imperfective past voice.

I'm still not sure about using the genitive or accusative for the direct object of a negative sentence. Is this correct? Я не понимаю этот вопрос. Since the direct object is one specific thing, it's in the accusative?

What about this sentence? Я делаю, что могу, чтобы помочь членам семьи. I want to say, "I do what I can to help the members of my family."

So it should be "Я не понимаю этого вопроса".
However, this rule seems to be becoming outdated nowadays. In my idiolect, both "Я не понимаю этот вопрос" and "Я не понимаю этого вопроса" are correct. But "Я не понимаю этого вопроса" sounds bookish and "Я не понимаю этот вопрос" sounds as in everyday conversations.

That is correct.
But it sounds better with "мой": "Я делаю, что могу, чтобы помочь членам моей семьи" or "Я делаю, что могу, чтобы помочь моей семье". Not sure, why the pronoun is required in this case... mmmm... maybe the reason is that when used without "мой", it sounds as if you are talking to a member of your family. Uh... Never mind! :)

A couple more simple questions.

Is either one of these correct or one better than the other?
Я не очень похож на своих братьев.
Я не много похож на своих братьев.

What if I want to say, "I used to be an athlete." Is it Я был спортсменом. or Я был атлетом.? I want to say this was serious sports, that I played sports all through college competitively, not as a hobby like jogging or tennis for fun.

Even the word "sports" isn't that clear to me. If I want to say, "I always liked sports." Would it be Мне всегда нравились спортивны игры. ?

Я был спортсменом. Я занимался серьёзным/большим спортом.

"атлет" will not do here. It is an emotional epithet (first meaning is "a beautiful strong man with impressive constitution"), applying it to oneself is funny.

Мне всегда нравился спорт. or Мне всегда нравились спортивные игры. depending on what exactly you mean.

Спортивные игры are football, basketball, etc. (that is interactive competition of teams) but NOT sprint, weight-lifting etc.

But all of those above are спорт.

"Я серьёзно занимался спортом."

(а человек, который занимается "индивидуальными" видами спорта не для того, чтобы всех победить, называется физкультурник)

Here there is a story about a mother who never pays for a bus ticket for her son, saying he is too young, even though he isn't. The boy is ashamed to be treated like a baby and he tries different ways to assert himself. In discussing this story I'm having a few problems.

If I want to say, "She doesn't want to admit that he isn't a baby anymore." is it Она не хочет признаться, что он больше не ребёнком. Should ребёнок be in the instrumental here?

What about она всегда сказала, что он ещё не учником. Is this correct?

To say, "He isn't that young.", should it be Он не так молод or Он не так молодой?

он ещё не ученик
он ещё не является учеником
(видимо, подразумевается "он ещё не школьник"?)

Он не так молод - ок
Он не такой молодой - ok
Если речь о ребёнке, то "молодой" по отношению к детям не употребляется.
Возможно: "он ещё слишком маленький" или
"в его возрасте ещё можно ездить бесплатно"

This is a complex sentence for me, maybe I'm making it too complex. I want to say, "At times our kids don't do what we ask them to do." Иногда дети не делают, что мы просим их делать. I'm really not sure about imperfective/perfective here. What's the clearest way to say this in Russian?

This is another complex sentence I'm not sure how to link together. "I hope I'll be healthy enough to do what I want to do." (The discussion is about life after retirement.)

Я надеюсь, что буду достаточно здоров, чтобы заниматься тем, чем мне захочется.
Я надеюсь, что здоровье у меня будет хорошее и я смогу делать то, что захочу.
Я надеюсь, что здоровье у меня тогда будет достаточно хорошее для того, чтобы делать то, что я захочу.

Дети часто не слушаются (слушаться - это такой спец.глагол ;-) )

How about this one? I'm always a little confused on how to express in Russian what we express with infinitive phrases in English. This is from a discussion about childhood memories. I want to say, "I remember playing football." Would that be Я помню, как играл в американсий футбал.?

Here is another difficult sentence for me, talking about why life might be better after retirement. Из за того что, я не должен будет делать много, что я должен сейчас делать. I want to say that I won't have to do a lot of things that I'm obligated to do now (that I'm working).

This is another one: У меня будет большо времени, чтобы делать много, на тот у меня сейчас времени нет. I want to say something like, "I'll have more time to do a lot of things I don't have time for now."

The word order is unnatural.
Есть разница между удовольствием и счастьем.
Разница между удовольствием и счастьем есть.
Между удовольствием и счастьем разница есть.

Удовольствие и счастье - это не одно и то же.

I don't understand the structure of the second part. As a mechanical translation into English, how would it go? This is the best I can do: I will have more time for a lot among which for what isn't enough now. I don't understand how из того fits in. Is there a simpler way to express this?

I used empty brackets to mark places where your translation contained some additional words, which, I believe, are better to skip (still they can be kept). Namely you wrote "... у меня сейчас времени нет". It is OK and can be left as it is, but in Russian it is better style to skip (у меня) and (времени), because all those parts are contained in the main clause and are not necessary to repeat.

У меня будет больше времени, на многое из того, на что (skipped мне) сейчас (skipped времени) не хватает.

Mechanically: I will have more time for many of things, that now I have not enough time for.

In Russian constructions like "то что" are used to connect clauses in a complex sentence and often IMO can be translated as "a thing that" (or "a person that" or whatever).

Almost done with this chapter. I'm trying to discuss the difficulties in learning Russian. Are these sentences correct grammatically and/or do they make sense?

Я не понимаю даже не одного слова. I'm not sure if слово should be in the genitive or accusative.
Я изучал по себе до сих пор. I want to say, "Up to now, I've been studying on my own."
Может быть мне нужны будут ещё два года, прежде чем, что смогу говорить хорошо.
Мой словарный запас очень мало/ограничен/славый. Are any of the adjectives ok?

До сих пор я учился сам.
