Adjective case endings, in particular genitive plural.

Please translate the following sentence from English to Russian.

Common characteristics of nouns, pronouns and adjectives.


I believe in this case the words nouns, pronouns and adjectives are used as adjectives, because they are modifying the word characteristics.
I think they would be in the genitive case, because of the word "of".

My question: the endings for nouns and adjectives have a gen. plural adjective ending, but the ending for the word pronoun is a masculine singular nominative adjective ending. This may be an exception, but by every adjective ending chart I've seen, this is the situation. This question is awkward because don't have my cyrillic letters on my keyboard yet, and I am anxious to get an answer to this question. Why the difference in the endings?

I don't really understand your question. Please rephrase it. The word for "noun" is имя сущестивтельное or существительное for short. The word for pronoun is местоимение. And the word for adjective is имя прилагательное(or прилагательное for short). Although they may look like adjectives and decline like them, they really are nouns. They aren't modfying anything.

What do you mean? The endings for nouns and adjectives have any ending they need to take. What would the word "pronoun" have to do with nouns and adjectives in general? And it has a neuter singular ending, anyway. And in this particular sentence, it would not be nominative.

EDIT: If you mean the words "nouns" and "adjectives" in this particular sentence(quotation marks make all the difference), then yes, they do have a genitive plural adjective ending. In this sentence, the word "pronouns" does look like this: местоимений, because the genitive plural ending for all nouns ending in -ие is -ий. It doesn't mean it becomes an adjective, it just happens to look the same.

Yes, I did mean the words "nouns", "pronouns" and "adjectives". If indeed they are nouns in the phrase, "Common characteristics of nouns, pronouns, and adjectives", are all of them nouns, or just the word, "pronoun"? By the way, this sentence is from the text, "V puti!", page 2. You have basically answered my question, except I'm not sure of the different treatment of the words "nouns and adjectives" and that of the word "pronouns". If they aren't modifying anything in this sentence, why do they have adjectival endings, and not noun endings.

They are all nouns.

The full word is имя существительное, so here существительное is modifying имя(which is often left out). But there are plenty of nouns that have adjective endings. An example would be управляющий.

And there's one of my favorites, насекомое 'insect'.
