struck down
I've got a TV, and I'm not afraid to use it
Adjectives ending in -нный are long form participles (past passive participles).
Therefore you look up the verb, which in this case is a bit irregular, but:
повергать
Which means "to cast, to throw, to strike (down)"
Therefore the past passive participles means "thrown down, cast down"
E.g. Он был повержен - He was thrown down (short form)
Поверженный человек жил в... - The thrown down man lived in... (long form).
Another example:
Написать - to write (perfective)
Наисан(ный) - written.
Книги написаны Иваном - The books are written by Ivan
Написанные книги Иваном очень интересные - The "written by Ivan books" are very interesting.
Вот пять билетов, которые были куплены вчера - Here are five tickets which were bought yesterday
May also be written in a more bookish, formal style:
Вот пять билетов, купленных вчера
Short forms are indeclineable. Full forms are used to replace a Который clause. They agree in case, number and gender with the noun they describe (unlike который, which functions seperately within its own subclause)
E.g. билетов (gen. pl), so купленных (gen. plu).

man I owe you...
I have never seen an explanation for past participles before
this one is great thx!
just one question
how do you find out the root for past participle
написан
куплен
т.д.
You use perfective verbs, usually.Originally Posted by Mordan
For -ать verbs, you just remove the -ть and add -н.
-н
-на
-но
-ны
(Masc, fem, neut, plur).
Or for the long form- нный, -нная, -нное....etc.
The thing is, the stress often shifts back a sylable, but sometimes it doesn't and sometimes the feminine has fixed stress on the final а.
Сделать - Cделан
Работа сделана - The work is done.
Some verbs, like открыть have past passive participles in:
Открыт(ый).
I think it is -ыть, -уть, -ять verbs.
Е.g. - Магазин открыт - The shop is open.
Открытый магазин большой - The open shop is big.

I suppose you imply a Vrubel's painting "The demon defeated"?
