    отмазывать

right, im told this word in the meaning 'to find reasons not to do something' is bad, like jargon. my russian teacher say's it shouldn't be used in this meaning but my my girlfriend and her friends say it quite often and other russian youths have said it too. so, whats the general consensus on this word?

Translation of the phrase, you wrote is "Отмазываться".
Example: Отмазываться от армии - do smth. to not to go to Army
    - Меня забирают в армию
    - А я отмазался

    Отмазаться от работы...

    Отмазывать/отмазать (кого-то/somebody) - to eliminate someone's troubles (like jail...)

    - Меня завтра пошлют на дежурство ?
    - Не бойся, я тебя отмазал..

    Feel free to use it.

It is a jargon word. You would not sound like a well-spoken person with this vocabulary. It is not particularly offensive, just don't use it for public presentations or at a job interview.
I've got a TV, and I'm not afraid to use it

У Lt. Columbo есть отмазка: он общается с русскими в узком дружеском кругу.
