    Имеет смысл!

По словарю, значение "хвататься за соломинку" - to catch at a straw, to clutch at straws
"Особенно упорно надо заниматься тем, кто ничего не знает." - Като Ломб

"В один прекрасный день все ваши подспудные знания хлынут наружу. Ощущения при этом замечательные, уверяю вас." -Кто-то

In this context, this phrase means that somebody hoped into the good end, even when all hopes have been lost.

Of course the phrase "хвататься за соломинку" sounds more habitually, but poets very often tend to rephrase stable expressions into suitable ones.
