Thread: но и

I haven't seen these two words used together before. Does it mean 'and', or is there a more subtle meaning? It came from the sentence;

"Там отличается еда, но и цены тоже"

Which I believe means that the price is proportionate to the quality of the food...

Но и = but also

As soon as I read what you wrote, I thought 'how obvious!' I still expect Russian words to correspond neatly to English words; I think this is limiting me. I saw "тоже" and immediately discounted the possibility that "и" would mean "also" .

The food was different there and the prices (were different) as well.

отличается seems to mean 'distinguishes itself' in this context, I think...
