    забей

I was talking to a Russian friend of mine on the internet. He asked me a question about an english word, and as I was about to answer it he said to me "забей. я пойду. до скорого!"

Does "забей" mean "nevermind" or something to that effect in this situation?

    Thanks!

nevermind = don't worry, I figured it out

    P.S. Does not "ничего" = "don't mind"?

Сайбот, забей на это слово. В этом контексте оно может означать что угодно: "забудь" (fugged abuht), "расслабься" (tek it eazy), "всё путём", etc.

Basically it's a part of a very obscene expression, so don't use it at formal parties

    It means "f$%^ it"

Of course no one is to use it at formal parties or something alike.

But at my place it's not considered very rude. It's just a word from a young guys' lexicon. However, I doubt its origins...

During my years in college (which was some time ago) the expression was used in its full form: забей на это х$%. Later it kinda shortened but I would still disrecommend using it other than among us boys. After all, to a non-native English speaker there appears to be no single obscene word in "up yo%^s" .

Забей has nothing rude. All young people say so now.
kwatts59, I think, "don't mind" means something like "don't take it into account", and the closest Russian equivalent is "не обращай внимания". Am I wrong?

The meaning of "don't mind" depends on context.

    "I don't mind" = "I don't care" or "It doesn't bother me"

"Don't mind him" = "Ignore him" or "Don't pay attention to him" or "Don't let him bother you"

    Another context:

    - Чё делаешь?
    - Работаю.
    - Ты чё, сегодня же суббота!
    - Да знаю...
    - Забей (на работу), пошли в кино!

Here it means "stop working, forget about it".

Net surfer, how dare you desecrate the symbol of the older generation, of your mum and dad, of your nana and grandpa? Such sick jokes are out of place here
