Thread: Дел....

I came across this sentence:

--------------У тебя сегодня много дел?

I got a bit confused by the word "дел" in the sentence.
I couldn't find a good entry for it in the dictionary.

This is a NOUN right? I.e.

--------------You've got plenty of things to do today?


But it can also be a verb, right? If anybody could help me understand this I'd be very grateful!

Дел is the genitive plural from "дело" - business, affair, thing to do.
You have many things-to-do today.

It can be a verb: Тебе сегодня надо много сделать. (actually, as a question, it would sound clumsy). "Много дел" is a set phrase, very common.

There is also perfective verb деть (smth. like "to put") which have the form дел (past, single) but it is not the case here.

Thanks.. I don't know why I wasn't able to figure out that it was the plural... I just hadn't seen that word in plural before..

All the same, it's so nice to be able to get answers here. Makes the learning so much nicer.

But some people can say "делов" instead of "дел" in colloquial speech
"Да тут делов-то всего на полчаса работы!"
