    We learned this verb the other day in class. I asked my instructor if he knew why it's so irregular, and he didn't know. Anyone here have a clue?

    Grammarians call irregular those verbs which exhibit two different stems in past and non-past conjugations. The 'a' in "расти" must have been a 'о' in the past. It's still here in past forms and derived words like "рост". That's pure speculation though.

    I agree. It is a Sisyphusean task to try to explain historical changes of this kind. Why don't you ask him about хотеть or бежать and watch him squirm!

    If you don't mind, I'd re-phrase that as follows:

    Никому не дано исправить русский язык. Придётся заучить все неправильные глаголы.

    1. выучить = to learn completely
    заучить = to repeat something over and over until you remember (that's what you'd be doing with those cursed verbs)

    2. придётся = someone/everyone/we/one would have to

    3. поправить = to issue a small fix/correction
    исправить = to fix up (completely)
    Словом можно обидеть. Словарём - убить.

    I'd like only say that Zubr's "Нам нужно выучить все эти неправильные глаголы" sounds perfect to me.
    In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.
