В начале лета выпускники школ (сдавали/сдали) итоговые экзамены и (получали/получили) аттестаты зрелости.
сдавали/получали = In the begin of the Summer students sat in classrooms, read exams' tasks, answered exams' questions etc, after that they stayed in a ballroom, honored with exams passing and received certificates with applauses.

сдали/получили = In the begin of the Summer students have their exams passed and received the certificates. (they don't need to pass these exams any more and they already have their certificates in their hands.)
