Some people-related words (especially, ethnicity terms) have the singular suffix -ин: крестьянин, татарин, англичанин, марсианин
In plural, they don’t have the suffix and the ending is either -ы or -е: татары, but крестьяне, англичане марсиане.

The word хозяин has an even more weird paradigm:

	sg.	pl.
nom.	хозяин	хозяева
gen.	хозяина	хозяев
dat.	хозяину	хозяевам
acc.	хозяина	хозяев
inst.	хозяином	хозяевами
loc.	хозяине	хозяевах

The same suffix -ин- is also used with some inanimate nouns: град “hail” — градина “single piece of hail”, картофель “potato” — картофелина “single potato”. Though, it remains in plural: градины, картофелины.
So татарин is something like “single piece of Tatar”.
