    Чуда чуда!

I borrowed the game Ghost Recon (not Island Thunder BTW). And you’re this team of specialists right. Well your enemies are Russian extremists and when I was doing a house invasion the Russian dude shouts "чуда чуда!". I'm guessing that’s the right spelling and words (it's kind of hard to hear when your spraying bullets at each other). Anyways does anyone know what that means? And is it misspelled...

The word 'чудо' means 'a miracle'. If it is 'чуда чуда' (the word is in genitive case here) it means that he wants somebody to show him a miracle, if he shouts 'чудо чудо' (nominative case) it means that he's just seen a miracle (at least he thinks so) and is shouting about it (because of the excitement). I think that in your case the latter version is more likely.

Hehehehehe...I was just playing that today and as soon as I saw that I started thinking of Ghost Recon. That's the game where they say something like Готы! Also something like Растатакаюсь! In that swamp mission, go to the two-story house and listen to the guys there drinking egg drinks or something. They have a little random conversation

It probably was туда. No wonder I couldn't find the word in my dictionary. I didn't hear it right and my dictionary is probably too cheap to include the word чуда.

And a few more questions... while playing the game I heard some of them say what I think was смотрите. They pronounced it like smo (whatever) and I pronounce it sma (whatever). Am I pronouncing it wrong?

And what does щорт mean? In the first level where you have to get the Russian officer out of the caves alive (or dead) and if you do decide to capture him alive he continually says щорт throughout the level until you get him to the extraction point. I just heard that today because the first time trough the game I killed everybody in the caves (the officer included).

As for смотри case. We pronounce it like сматри but write as смотри. The same with молоко. You are unlikely to hear in the shop a person saying Дайте мне пожалуйста молоко, instead of it you will hear: Дайте мне пажалуста малако

    Not щорт but чёрт!

well, the stress changes quite a bit in the word Смотрет, so it's going to be hard to pin the exact form of it... but, a large percent of the time, the o is stressed.

Well at least I got the last two letters right . Don't worry I think I know the stress rules pretty well. As I wouldn't pronounce старая like staraya but more like staryi.

As for чуда most likely I heard it wrong. I don't have the game anymore so I couldn't confirm it anyways . But I think the stress was with the у.

they pronounce Чуда! Чуда! with the stress on the у. Among other things, they also sing songs. It does sound exactly liek that, but I seriously doubt they'd be yelling "Wonders! Wonders!" in the middle of a shootout.
Staraya - if i'm not wrong it sounsd like STARaya. But you can still hear "-aya".

I guess they're shouting: Чудо! Чудо! meaning I can't bellieve it!! That's what I can think of.

Pravit By the way do on purpose put your location as Сомалия? I just heard that it is Сомали in russian.

I thought all Russian vowels loose their stress whatever form when they are not stressed ? Like ст

it seems like, as long as you make some sound after an adjective, you'll be fine if it's not stressed. if u listen to "russian radio" and listen to them when they say "Russkoe radio" you can just barely barely hear the diffrence between iy, and oe. sometimes, to me, i can't even hear the diffrence. i think i have a problem with stressing the worng endings too, because i want people to know i know grammar ! for example

*some kid* Eh, ti cho ta pesna ?
    *me* Eta russKAYA PESNA!!!!

oh well, i'll settle down sooner or later.

(i know this is the wrong post, but im at school and i don't have to go back and fourth (the evil librairian is patroling !) but ~Jaspermay, 4 months ??? i think you're better than me, and ive been at it for almost 11 months exaclty ! wow ! good work )

Pravit is right, STARaya and STARiy do sound differently. Maybe your ears have to get used to it. Of course when one is talking very quickly he can 'swallow the endings'.

The consonants are pronounced soft before the soft vowels, not after.
For example in the word "тЁтя" both "т" are soft because there is a soft vowel after each, in the word "пЕна" "п" is soft because it is followed by the soft vowel "е" and "н" is not soft because it is followed by "а" which is not a soft vowel. This rule doesn't apply to vowels.

In "до свидAния" "и"(the second one) is usually not pronounced but it softens the preceding consonant so it sounds as if it was "до свиданья";and the letter 'я' can be confused with 'е' because it's unstressed (When I was a litttle girl I thought it was досвиданье written as one word )До свидания comes from the word "свидание" which means a meeting, an appointment or a date (nowadays it is mostly used in the latter meaning), and literally "до свидания" means "till we meet again", "свидание" is in the genetive case here with the preposion "до".
