literally this sentence means that the German attack shocked/confused/astounded Stalin so much that he couldn't work for a few days. Obviously he had seriously hoped the Molotoff Rebintrop act would protect the USSR from any such actions by Germany and that all the display of power across the USSR borders which preceded the invasion was no more than an attempt by the Germans to provoke the Soviet forces to attack them first so that such an attack could then be used as an excuse to invade the USSR, thus Stalin's strickt orders not to react to German provocations.Originally Posted by Ilkay
