Мы с моим другом были скучны вчера ночью, поэтому мы ходим в магазин для купить пирог. Мы сказали друг о друге, и посмеялись друг над другом. Когда мы придёлись на магазин, я учил что у меня нет доларов и не могу покупил что-нибудь, так мы удёлись.

My friend and I were board last night, so we walked to the store to buy pie. My talked about eachoter and laughter at eachother. When we reached the store, I learned I had no money and couldn't buy anything, so we left.

How did I do? Corrections + any nessecary explanations would ge apprecated.

This is my guess at the first sentence.

Here is my attempt:

Мы с моим другом были скучны вчера ночью, поэтому мы ходим в магазин для купить пирог.

нам с моим другом было скучно вчера ночью, поэтому мы за пирогом ходили в магазин.

You need to have dative here because it is a personal feeling. For example: я скучен vs. мне скучно (It is boring to me)

And you can say things like "ходить за хлебом" or "ходить за чем-нибудь" and that means "to go for something" or "to go to buy something".

Мы сказали друг о друге, и посмеялись друг над другом.

мы говорили друг о друге, и смеялись друг над другом.

"говорили", because it is a process. "We were talking about eachother." Same with "смеялись".

Когда мы придёлись на магазин, я учил что у меня нет доларов и не могу покупил что-нибудь, так мы удёлись.

когда мы пришли в магазин, я узнал, что у меня не было денег и я не мог купить ничто, поэтому мы ушли.

You had your verb conjugations a bit messed up. пришли and ушли. узнал is a better word here, meaning "I found out/I learned". Also, I am kinda second guessing myself about ничто. Maybe ничего would work here too? ничто just sounded right at the time.

Overall it was pretty good. Just a couple of things here and there. They really didn't take away the meaning of the story.[/quote]

Let's check it sentence by sentence.

My friend and I were board last night, so we walked to the store to buy pie. - Мы с моим другом были скучны вчера ночью, поэтому мы ходим в магазин для купить пирог.

to be bored = скучать
были скучны = to be boring

"ночь" usually starts at midnight, that why you better say "вечер" if you mean an evening time.

"ходить" in perfective aspect = пойти, in plural = пошли

as kwatts59 already notised "чтобы купить" - it's a standard preposition in the cases "to do something" - "чтобы сделать что-то"

Мы с моим другом скучали вчера вечером, поэтому мы пошли в магазин чтобы купить пирог.

You were absolutely right when you used an imperfective asp. of verb "to laugh" - "посмеялись". So you had to use the same form of verb "to talk" - "поговорили".

Мы поговорили друг о друге и посмеялись друг над другом.

When we reached the store, I learned I had no money and couldn't buy anything, so we left. - Когда мы придёлись на магазин, я учил что у меня нет доларов и не могу покупил что-нибудь, так мы удёлись.

"To reach" in the meaning "to arrive" = приходить, if the past plural = пришли

"в магазин" - I'm afraid there is no general rule about the prepositions, so you just have to remember: в магазин, в кино, в школу, в театр, в цирк, в зоопарк, but: на пляж, на работу, на праздник, на парад

"to learn" in the meaning "to realize" = понимать/осознавать, in the past, the first person = понял/осознал

money = деньги

"to buy" in perfective = купить. Using the imperfective aspect in this case is not grammatically incorrect, but sounds unnatural, as if you are going to shop for a month at least.

In Russian you have to use double negatives and combine a negative verb with a negative pronoun: не могу ничего купить.

"so" in the meaning "because" = поэтому

"to leave a place" = "у[jlbnm", in perfecive plural - "ушли"

Когда мы пришли в магазин, я понял, что у меня нет денег, и я не могу ничего купить, поэтому мы ушли.

Wow. I was kinda off....but anyway...

Why поговорили and посмеялись. I realize that this prefix "по-" emphasizes a duration and adds a bit of informality, but is it really needed? Would the sentence loose any meaning with just "говорили" and "смеялись"?

Don't worry, saibot you're right too ("мы говорили друг о друге, и смеялись друг над другом"), and your variant sounds good too.

I agree, you can say "говорили и смеялись", I just want to point out that you better not mix different aspects in the parallel structures.

Thanks everyone for your help. I need to find a way to learn aspects, because I'm currently completly guessing as to which one is correct. Is there a site I could perhaps read that would explain aspects to me?
