Thread: МИН

A friend of mine from Ukraine wants to know how to translate her major, Международная Информация, into English(and German). I think "International Relations/internationale Beziehungen" would probably be the closest translation, but МИН apparently goes beyond the Western definition of "International Relations." What do you think?

Wow, apparently there is no such major as Международная Информация in Russia. Does anyone know a good translation for Мiжнародна Iнформацiя? If anyone knows Ukrainian, you could visit her uni's site about it, although from what I could understand of it, it really does look like "International Affairs/Международные Отношения/internationale Beziehungen."

I guess Международная Информация = International Information or International News Analysis.

It's a miracle but that site is pretty clear for me.

The thing is, we have no major(that I've heard of) in the West called "International Information." I'm guessing it's just International Relations with a specialization in information systems analysis.

What can I do!? Sometimes people give strange names. It's so called "аналогов в мире не имеет".

А ее папа говорит, что самая подобная специализация на западе это "Information Management." Хотя я этому пока не очень верю.

Пожалуй это сильный аргумент. Порой университеты сами придумывают спецальности и названия для них. Думаю, что это тот самый случай.

Here it is just called Intelligence Officer, and you will typically be employed by the CIA or other companies interested in information gathering,

Wrong. Did you even look at the description of the major and the courses you needed to take on that website? In Ukraine, "Міжнародна Інформация" is not studied by those who are planning on a future career with intelligence services. The major combines courses in history, politcs, foreign languages, etc. with computer and mathematics courses. I don't know about Denmark, but I don't know of any American or German university with the major "Intelligence Officer." People who want to work with the intelligence services here generally study something like International Relations or International Business, then are further trained by whichever government agency that hires them. However, studying one of the majors I mentioned above does not necessarily mean you're going to work in an intelligence service.
