Thread: держать за идиота

What is English for "держать за идиота"? For example, "Они держат меня за идиота"

They take me for an idiot.
or maybe
They see me as an idiot.

Who do you take me for? = За кого ты меня держишь?

I'd say take for an idiot is принимать за идиота while держать за идиота is different, it's more like consider/regard as an idiot, or even treat me as if I was an idiot, think I'm an idiot. It's not that they occasionally and mistakenly concluded that you might be an idiot, it's more when they act on the assumption you're an idiot.

I dunno, принимать за идиота vs держать за идиота, I don't see much of a difference. Not that a person cannot establish a preferable use of them for himself.
