What kind of emotion we want to express when we use it?

It has very wide spectre of meanings and emotions.
"wow", "I understand you", "yep", "amazing", "disgusting", etc. as meanings.
It is used more often with negative emotions: sorrow, distrust, compassion, disappointment, etc. But also can be used with astonishment, dreaminess. It is hard to remember all cases.
It depends on the context and surrounding phrases. All of these can be best choices.What is the best answer to this statement:
Да уж
Ничего себе
Вот это да
"Ничего себе" is used in positive/negative situations equally.Ι thought that ничего себе and Вот это да is when you react to something positive.
"Вот это да" is rarely used in negative situations, however it can be used with proper tone.
Да уж is about joining ironiccaly other's opinion.
One can't answer to "Unfortunately we decided to cancel the party! " with "Да уж".
But if one comments this statment with ,say, "Ничего себе" or expresses negativ feeling to the authors of this decision, you can support him with "Да уж".
