В Москве прошел первый конкурс красоты среди...

    Can somebody check my translation?

В Москве прошел первый конкурс красоты среди ВИЧ-инфицированных девушек «Мисс Позитив-2005». Его победительницей стала парикмахер из Чувашии. За позитивными и негативными моментами конкурса наблюдал корреспондент «Газеты.Ru».

In Moscow was the first beauty pageant amongst HIV-infected women "Miss Positive 2005". A hairdresser from Chusvashia became the pageant's first winner. The correspondent observed of the positive and negative moments of the pageant «Газеты.Ru».

OK. The translation has to be gramatically correct in English!!

In Moscow was the first beauty pageant amongst HIV-infected women "Miss Positive 2005".

    How about

The first beauty pageant amongst HIV-infecfected women has taken place in Moscow.

The correspondent observed of the positive and negative moments of the pageant «Газеты.Ru».

Observe of?????? Dat no goods ingerlish.

Anyway, notice that the web address is in the genitive? It's a Correspondant of Газета.ru.

A Gazeta.ru correspondant observed the positive and negative moments of the pageant.

Do you translate these yourself or use online translators? They always come out with crap English.

    Thanks TATY.

    Maybe this is better:
The first beauty pageant of HIV-infecfected women "Miss Positive 2005" took place in Moscow. A hairdresser from Chusvashia became the pageant's first winner. A correspondent from «Газета.Ru» observed the positive and negative moments of the pageant.

I use a combination of my memory, online-translator, dictionaries, forums etc.

I plugged the article into a translator and this is what I got.

In Moscow has passed the first competition of beauty among РКы-INFECTED girls " Ms. the Positive - 2005 ". His(its) winner became the hairdresser(barber) from Chuvashia. The correspondent observed of the positive and negative moments of competition " Newspapers. Ru ".

момент is one of those "translator's false friends." It rarely translates as "moment," and it doesn't here, either.

The fact that it's a cognate automatically makes us assume that it shares all meanings, when actually it only shares one.

kwatts, why did you plug the translation into a translator? I'd rather you'd plugged it into your head! That would have been a lot more useful. How often do you visit "Gazeta.Ru"?

They always come out with cr@p English.
I agree completely! I see no point in using online translators. I usually use them for looking up single words.

The Ukrainian-Russian online translator I use is gramatically good, but that's because the two languages are so similar.

    Yeah, very similar!

The Russian language has hardly anything to do with the English one.

    Exactly.

Since the Ukrainian and Russian word order, grammar, etc. are parralele. Translation word for word comes out OK. However since an English sentence is constructed completely differently, you come out with a load of shite.
