Thread: банкомат

For my Russian test tomorrow we were given a list of words for recognition/translation, including this one:

банкомат (bankomat)

I can't find it in any of my dictionaries and my instructor's email reply to my question neglected to actually answer the question, so I thought maybe you all could help me. I assume it means something like "ATM" but it's not coming up under "ATM" in any of my dictionaries, either. I know it's a real world, because it's all over a bunch of different Russian bank sites (usually банкоматы) but I'm not getting anything definitive from the context (it is, at least, showing up next to "АТМ.")

Anyone have a really simple translation for it?

cash machine, ATM, automatic cash terminal

To: в + Acc.
At: в + Prep.
From: из + Gen.

Events/Open Spaces (стадион, балет)
To: на + Acc.
At: на + Prep.
From: с + Gen.

Persons
To: к + Dat.
At: у + Gen.
From: от + Gen.

Ordinarily in the US an ATM is an open place. Is a банкомат a person? I'm confused.

Firslty, ATM is not an open place! It is a box. A box can not be an open space. Secondly, you don't go IN the ATM do you. To go to the university implies you go inside it. Something that clearly doesn't work for ATM, but for a normal bank, yes. That is why you have to use "approach up to" which is always used with "к"

Okay, I think I get it. I'll double check tomorrow, though, just in case the guy grading my test disagrees. ^_^ After all, I'm not learning Russian, I am learning Josh's Russian. At least till my final grade comes in.

Бармалей: So спасибо stays singular (or is just indeclinable), even when I'm trying to say "many thanks"? Or would I have to add много to make it clear that I'm referring to more than one (since I'm talking to a crowd of individuals)?

всем спасибо!
