What's the difference between the following words?
следить
смотреть
наблюдать

I typed the word "watch" into my on-line dictionary and 20 different words came out. These are the top three.

следить - to follow, ｓｐｙ, look after
смотреть - to look, watch
наблюдать - to observe

watch is also наблюдать, и следить тоже (смотреть за кем-то).

Watch him and be careful lest he should notice you.! -- Наблюдай/следи за ним и повнимательней, как бы не заметил тебя. Можно же так сказать?

Observe is also наблюдать, но скорее "обозревать" какое-то большое пространство. Например наблюдать окрестности с крыши, быть дозорным на наблюдательной вышке.
