But it depends on when you eat and how much.

It used to be that people had their biggest meal at lunch, then something lighter in the evening.

Nowadays, it is something light at lunch, and a big meal in the evening.

Here in the good old USA, TRADITIONALLY, "supper" is the eveing meal and "dinner" is the midday meal. At least that is still the way country people figure it. Beware Rusians: If you ask a city slicker, you will get confusing answers.

Yes, in England, we used to call the evening meal supper, or tea, and in the North of the country people still call dinner, tea.

My mum is from the north, and always shouts "Your tea's ready!"

But they teach us:

(to have) Lunch - обед(ать)
(to have) Dinner - ужин(ать)

He didn't say they still say it.

On Christmas day we have a Christmas dinner, but at about 1 o'clock. Dinner doesn't really mean "evening meal" in English, it means main meal, whether it be at noon, 4pm or 10pm.

You have a good point.
However, despite their historical equivalences, the English language between Canada (or more specifically, Ontario) and Britain seems to be different. Dinner means main meal literally, but nobody here uses it like that. Anyone eating at 1pm calls their meal "lunch".

I guess this poses a problem for someone whose first language is not English. You will have to learn the vocabulary for the country that you are living in! (which may very well be different from others)

Morning tea
Lunch
Afternoon tea
Dinner/tea
Supper

That was a thing really frustrating me. First I learned English at school, and our Russian teacher told us to memorize: "завтрак=breakfast, обед=dinner, ужин=supper", all the standard school textbooks edited in Russia were saying the same thing... And we knew that well.

Imagine my disappointment, when I first time found out that it's not the case.
