To say "I walked up the stairs"
is this how it would translate .. "Я взошла по лестнице"
??
Are there other ways of saying this? For example "Я пошла вверх лесницу"
What would be the best/clearest way to express this?

Взойти is elevated style.
подняться по лестнице is pretty much the only way to say that.
взойти is more for mountains as in "climb".
Well, I suppose you can say that, though it won't be as common as "подняться/спуститься по лестнице".
I do not claim that my opinion is absolutely true.
If you've spotted any mistake in my English, please, correct it. I want to be aware of any mistakes to efficiently eliminate them before they become a habit.
> Я взоходила на лифте??
No. Main usage of "взойти" is "солнце взошло". There is no "взоходила" also, but "взошла". "Подняться на лифте" is ok.
> Is there a way to express that you went up a floor without specifying the stairs or elevator?
"Поднятся на этаж"
Подняться/подниматься is your chose when someone or something is moving up:
Я поднялся по лестнице.
Я поднялся на лифте.
Я поднялся на вершину холма.
Лифт поднялся на третий этаж.
Поднимайся с кровати! (Вставай is also OK here.)
Взобраться/взбираться is normally used when a person is climbing up using his/her hands and feet.
Взойти/восходить is OK only for rising of the Sun, Moon, stars etc. Other meanings are typically too bookish, archaic or poetic.
