    приставов

::Sigh:: Can some one tell me what "приставов" is in English? I've tried all the online translators and it just keeps coming back to me as Pristavov which means nothing to me. Is a place in Russia?

It is in relation to this page:
    http://www.pristav.com/
    Services Judicial Pristavov?

    Thank in advance.

Приставов - genitive plural of пристав
    Judicial Services of the Police

    Or maybe "of the Superintendents"
    My dictionary gives both

In my dictionary "пристав" is translated "police officer" But it is not very good translation. Actually "пристав" is a man who works in a court. He must provide keeping laws. For example, if somebody does not come to a court пристав come to his home and forces him to go (sometimes by weapon). "Пристав" is official state job-title and it is seperate service from police.

Before revolution, word "пристав" mostly was applied to heads of local police departments. This word was dead for a long time, and resurrected several years ago to name some court officials - they are now "судебные приставы".

In modern Russian, pristav means a "court executor", it's the literate translation. He/she, as an example, implements a court verdict for confiscating of a culprit's property or tries to find a debtor after a court ruling.
