A translation of a poem

I've translated a poem that I like a lot, it's about a stray cat's afterlife. Unfortunately, there is not much rhyme in my translation into English.
Can you please correct any grammar / style mistakes and maybe try your poetic skills in translation into English as a poem to a poem :)

Я всего лишь кот

Мне казалось - я бегу
Полем
На не чующих травы
Лапах
Я не помню никакой
Боли,
Смерть была - один большой
Запах.

Помню небо -
Древний Кот многоликий.
Отряхнулся и пошёл,
Как по карте.
Не взаправду же ведь я - Дикий,
Чтоб смотреть, что там лежит
На асфальте.

А потом запахло мёдом и мятой,
Я в траву влетел по самые уши
И решил, что в новой жизни (девятой)
Буду тем же, кем и был, только лучше.

Был котёнком, в сказки не верил,
А потом забыл, как все забываем -
Здесь всегда распахнуты двери,
Это место называется Раем.

Рай кошачий, до последних окраин,
Благодать для тех, кто здесь поселился.
Но уж больно убивался хозяин -
Я чуть сразу же назад не родился.

Весь поникший от нахлынувшей скуки,
Брёл по Раю в поисках дома
И уткнулся в чьи-то тёплые руки,
Руки пахли странно знакомо.

Не запомнилось лицо и окраска -
Прятал морду в вороте платья.
Был покой и тихая ласка,
А потом нас встретили братья.

Было солнце (просто так, не в окошке)
Золотым, как рыбка на блюде.
И все были мы здесь - общие кошки,
А у нас, конечно, - общие люди.

Мы со взрослыми котами небрежно
Выходили в круг - померяться силой,
И мурлыкали мне кошки так нежно,
Потому что я большой и красивый.

Здесь тепло всегда, и чисто, и сухо,
Не бывает ни дождей, ни метели.
Раз порвал я, значит, Серому ухо -
Зажило, и пожалеть не успели.

Серый крут, он подох, видно, в драке.
Серой масти - аккурат мой братишка
По ночам ему всё снятся собаки,
Он рычит на них во сне, но не слишком.

Мне же снится: я бегу
Полем.
Каждая травинка -
Резная.
Может, каждый выбирать
Волен?
Я всего лишь кот, я -
Не знаю.

I am just a cat

It seemed like I ran
Across the fields
On my paws, felt no grass touching
Can’t recall any pain either
Death was like a sole immense smell.

I remember the sky –
Ancient cat of many faces,
I shook myself and set out
Like if I had a map.
It is not without good reason my name is Wild,
Otherwise I would’ve had a look
At what had been there on the pavement.

Then I smelled mint and honey,
Bounced into the grass up to my ears
And decided that I’d be the same, just a bit better
In my new ninth life.

Once I was a kitten, didn’t believe in fairy-tales,
Then I forgot it like we all do,
And here doors are always open,
This place is called Kingdom of heaven.

All cats’ heaven to the very edge of it
Is a blessing for those who now live there.
But my master cried so hard,
That I was almost born again.

Drooped with boredom that flooded me over,
I was wandering around heaven, searching home
I buried my head in someone’s warm palms
That smelled strangely familiar.

I don’t remember neither face, nor dress color
For I hid my face in the dress’ collar.
It was calm and silent caress,
Then we were met by the brethren.

Sun shone brightly (not through a window) –
Golden fish on a plate,
Here each of us was everyone’s cat,
And we had, of course, everyone’s people.

I and adult cats went to a ring
To try our strength in a fight,
Lady-cats were purring so gently,
For I was so big and so beautiful.

It is always warm, clean and dry here
Never rains, never snow blizzards,
Once I worried Gray’s ear -
It healed up so fast that there was no time to feel sorry for it.
Gray is tough; perhaps he died in a fight.
He’s gray-colored as if he was my brother,
He dreams about dogs in nights,
Growling at them in his dreams, though not much.

As for my dreams, I run
Across the fields.
Every blade of grass
Is a carved one.
Perhaps everyone has right
To choose.
I am just a cat
I don’t know it.
