i wont have any coffee today, praskovya osipovna, said ivan yakovlevich.instead, i would like to eat a bit of hot bread with onion.(that to say, ivan yakovlevich would have liked both the one and the other, but he knew that it was guite impossible to demand two things at once, for praskovya osipovna very much deslike such whims.) "let the fool eat the bread;all the better for me, the wife thought to herself, there will be an extra cup of coffee left".and she threw a loaf onto the table.

I have been told so many times that this word, being foreign, has zero ending. What's up with that?

    It's an archaic language.

This Gogol's short story was written in 1835, so a lot of woirds here are out of date. Nobody uses "кофию" nowadays, unless jokingly.

I suspect, but don't know for sure, that Gogol ment language of this dialogue to be ironic and even sarcastic and to imply a social level these people belonged to.
