I was wondering whats written on a few signs. Do stop signs say "Стоп", or do they say "Остановите"? If your looking for a hotel, would you find hotels that say "Конкурс" and "Конкурс нет"? What do warning signs say, like when drawing your attention to text that says not to plugin while underwater. In English, it might say "WARNING: Do not plug in while sleeping or underwater". What would the warning text be in Russian? Thanks

Russian signs offten is not so polite as English. Probably it's because too hard for ordinary people to understand these courtesy after Russian slang

What the politeness do you see in English "Keep off the grass", "Walk", "Don't walk","Exit", "Stop", "No parking","No smoking", "Open","Closed"?

Don't forget "Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again."

Both Стоп and Стой are used in signs. The former is used as a single word in the same way as STOP sign is used in English and the latter when something else follows. It's usually in the 2nd form singular in the signs.

Остановите is incorrect - it's a transitive verb requiring an object, not used in signs besides it's a polite form, not appropriate for signs.

Стой (стоять) is more abrupt than остановись (остановиться). You should say "Остановитесь, пожалуйста" to a taxi driver (please pull over) but a sentinel would cry out "Стой! Кто идёт?" to a stranger.

остановить (vt) - to stop (a vehicle)
остановиться (vi) - to stop (I stopped).

Останови(те) машину! - Stop the car!
Останови(те)сь! - Stop!

what do you mean by конкурс? it means contest... just give the signs in english you'd like translated

by the way, i think in russia some signs say STOP in english but i could easily be mistaken... been so long, one's memory easily fades

Sadly, our signs dont say СТОП in russian, they say STOP in english, just like in america.

Why sadly? That's an international standard (I mean, the sign, not the language). Besides, are you sure it is English? Maybe it's French. Or German. Or any other European language.
