    Is this right?

    Соловьев никогда не считал себя знатоком живописи, оценивая картины исключительно по тому впечатлению, которое они производили лично на него.

    My translation:
    Соловьев, having never considered himself knowledgeable about paintings, appraised paintings only based on the impressions that they made to him personally.

    Is живописи just paintings or all art?
    And картины are those paintings or are they other types of art?

    картины are pictures. Картина - a picture.

    Usually people say Картинка though, the diminutive when talking about like, poloroids, or kodak kinda pictures.

    I think Biancca's entirely correct. Картина may translate as paintings.
