Hello all! I am doing a working translation of Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky's short story "Катастрофа" and I am having some difficulty with one line:

" . . . лучами -- шипами -- лезвиями граней, самыми малостью и тленностью своими выскальзывают вещи из познания, защищают свои крошечные "я" от чужих "Я"."

I have something like "with rays, spikes, and the edges of blades, with their own very smallness and frailty, things slip from knowledge, protecting their tiny 'I' from foreign 'I's", which is certainly not very elegant, but I am hoping someone can tell me if I've at least captured the basic meaning of the quote.

Thank you for your help, and I can certainly return the favor with any questions about English!
