Can someone explain the bolded part for me?

Why wouldn't the guy be sleeping after 2 a.m.? If he is what he wants to be seen as, unpretentious in his ambitions, not having any interests or pursuits besides working at Solovyov's then he should be soundly sleeping at nights.
Comment: I think the point is that if the guy doesn't have much ambitions and other goals besides his routine job then why the heck wouldn't he be sleeping late at night. Does he have a guest or something? :D

Yes, that's an old one - if 1996 is old - but I never read it.
The sad truth is that the whole part in bold simply means not ambitious. Anything longer than that I would consider a waste of English words. Russian is an extremely bulky language, not economical at all.
I think that although "непритязательный в плане честолюбия" sounds like an interesting phrase to say, it is bulky even in Russian and you could simply say "нечестолюбивый" to convey the same meaning. That depends on the mastery of the writer. I believe that Russian classics would be as short and to the point as possible and they would sound beautiful at the same time. They say that "brevity is the sister of talent" and that's what Marinina lacks here.Quote:

Андрей Кивинов -- один из моих любимых авторов-детективщиков, пишет очень талантливо и с юмором. Немало книг можно найти, например, на http://nesenenko.narod.ru/KIV_IND.html
Андрей Константинов -- тоже питерский автор, тоже один из моих любимых (по его книгам поставлены сериалы "Бандитский Петербург", "Честь имею"). В Сети его книг никак не найду, в магазинах можно без проблем. Впрочем, пишет он жестко, и если вас шокируют грубые выражения, насилие, секс и пр. -- читать его, может, и не надо.
Юлия Латынина -- создатель жанра российского "экономического триллера". "Охоту на Изюбря" прочитать стоит точно (сейчас по ОРТ идет сериал по этой книге). Впрочем, то, что я говорил про Константинова, относится и к ней. Многие книги можно скачать с http://latynina.ru
Борис Акунин -- лучший российский автор, работающий в жанре ретро-детектива, создатель суперсыщика 19-го века Эраста Фандорина. Часть его романов доступна для скачивания с http://www.akunin.ru
