Ok, you're going to laugh, but what exactly is the point of lingvo.ru? Like what does the site do or help with? I went to it once but it was at the beginning of my learning days (oh, like 2 months ago!) and I was so confused when I was looking at it that I got scared. Everyone recommends it though, so it's gotta be helpful.

    Not at all.

Below the window Слово или строка для перевода: you can choose the language. Then type a word in the window in either language.

    Перевод button means - translate.
Варианты searches for similar sounding words.
Поиск means search for the word in the databases.

http://online.multilex.ru/ is an online dictionary that also shows the stress point so you know how to say the word.

Awesome. Thanks a lot майк. So I can use this website if I want to go from English to Russian or vice versa? The dictionary should be pretty cool, I'm fine without transliteration, it's just figuring out where the stress goes, so that's cool. Thanks again!

Ok, now THAT is what i need. Something with stress points. When i talk to my friend in SPB, I am always wrong where i stress the word. Thanks. I will have a look. Thank you!

Might anyone know of a good dictionary that is a book and not online that provides both russian and english, as well as transliteration. I have the paperback version of the Hippocrene Standard Dictionary (with phonetics), but it comes up short when I look up words.

Thanks for all the help with this one. I am sure I will have more soon.

The deal at the bottom with the Penguin book is really good. I have the Penguin, and I'm (impatiently) waiting for the dictionary which I ordered last week. Apparently a few people around here think it's a good book.

Oh thank you so much. I think I am going to end up spending more than I thought because I also saw another book linked to the one you showed me that teaches you 501 verbs, conjugated. And of course, that had a combo offer to get flash cards. This looks like it will be a big help.

The Kenneth Katzner Russian-English English-Russian dictionary is the sweetness. It doesn't have transliteration, but, for heaven's sake, it takes like an hour to memorize the Russian alphabet. You might as well learn it now. Translit is a crutch and will ultimately hamper your progress.

Thank you for being straightforward about using transliteration as a crutch. I have memorized the Russian alphabet, and I try very hard when my friend and I chat in MSN to have him type as many words as he can in cyrillic. I guess the only time I use transliteration is when I SMS him, but it makes sense to know the cyrillic and transliterate the words myself.

I am the worst at placing accents (stress) on words. I always seem to be wrong.

I also have not grasped when to change peoples names in different places, for example: Dima, Dimu, Dimoi, etc. (I know there are others).

    Thank you again

Heh. Thank you for thanking me for being straightforward. I wasn't trying to be a jerk, I just hate dressing up facts in polite (insipid) language. Sounds like you're making a fine effort.
