Help to translate a few names into Russian
I have difficulty in writing the following names in Russian.
I appreciate very much if you write them in Russian.
Nissanka De Silva
Jayatissa De Silva
Kumar De Silva
Suneth De Silva
Harinda De Silva
Daya De Silva
.................................................. ........................................
I wrote some names in Russian. I know they are not correct.
Roger [ Роджер]
Eric [ Эрик]
Michael [ Майкл]
Eva [ Ева ]
I would be grateful to you if you could help me.

These are correct :)
Why are you having troubles with the other ones? Just make a simple transliteration.
Nissanka De Silva - Ниссанка Де Сильва (or Силва)
Jayatissa De Silva - Джаятисса Де Сильва
Kumar De Silva - Кумар
Suneth De Silva - Сунет
Harinda De Silva - Харинда
Daya De Silva - Дая

Actually, their spelling depend on their original pronunciation, so "a simple transliteration" is not the best solution.

Re: Help to translate a few names to Russian
I thank Kathrerina and Оля for the replies.
It is a tall order to write Russian. I must look at my Russian grammars and the Internet resources to write Russian. I can never write properly.
I must post here to get your help.
As Оля says a simple transliteration won't work. You should know good Russian

Оля is right. For example, “a simple transliteration” of the name Jayatissa is Джаятисса. As you see the letter j was translated as дж (like in the word Jupiter), but recently the Swedish name Johanna was discussed in the thread “Best translation of my name”, and you will find interesting example there, which uncovers a problem of name translation. Therefore, you have to try to convey a sound of each name, if you want to get a correct translation into Russian.

Re: Help to translate a few names to Russian
Thanks everybody for the replies.
Оля
I have no problems with the original pronunciation. I speak English, Swedish and French.
Russian is a tall order to me.
For me Russian and French are beautiful languages.
I have been to Russia and France several times. I have been to the USSR during the Communist era. I flew with Aeroflot several times.
I was in the great city of Leningrad and visited the Hermitage.
I will visit the Hermitage again. I will cross the border between Russia and Finland. I will take the ferry to Finland. Then I will go over the land to Russia. I did the same trip in the past.
It is no longer Leningrad
.
Are you in Moscow or St Petersburg?
One of my Russian teachers is from CapatoP.
She(Tachana) told us Gagarin was born in CapatoP.
I don't think I can write the word 'CapatoP correctly.

In which language did you want to write it?
-
Re: Help to translate a few names to Russian
In Russian, of course
I think in English either Saratov or Saratop is acceptable.
Is Capatob correct?
It is no easy to write Russian.

Re: Help to translate a few names to Russian
Have you forgotten in Russian only Cyrillic is used?
Try using dictionaries. I'm sure they are worth your attention. :D I would recommend you the first link if you don't know any suitable resources and don't have good paper/installable dictionaries for translating from/into the languages you use.

It was not about you personally. The "you" in English can have an impersonal meaning. If it helps you, I can re-word my sentence this way: To write a name in Cyrillic, one should know its original pronunciation.

Благодаря "простой транслитерации" получаются всякие Сеаны вместо Шонов. )))

+много
Also from which language you are translating. (I don't mean you personally by this you, the person who needs the translation, I mean the person who translates.) You should also know if there are traditional translations, when they should be used and when not. :)
Doesn't the example with the name Peter show good enough that to translate the name one should have more information? :? Ok, I'll try once more.
Michael Jackson - Майкл Джексон
Michael Schumacher - Михаэль Шумахер
Both names are spelled Michael but they are translated differently into Russian.
You haven't given this information. You haven't written what you need the translation for (yes, it's important for the name translation, don't think it's my curiosity).
The names you've translated yourself are spelled correctly. :) And I'd say there are no other possibilities of translating the names Eric and Roger into Russian. But I also hadn't known the name Johann can be translated as Юхан before Jonanna asked how tho translate her name. But now Юхан seems to be the correct and even preferable translation of the Swedish name Johann (but not German one, of course). And if it's the name of one Swedish king, it can be only Юхан, not Йохан or something. So now I’m not sure in anything. )))
And we still don't know from which language you need the translation. English? Swedish? Some names from one language and others from another? Spanish? Italian? You may think it's obvious but it's not :!:
Мы даже не знаем, с какого языка нас попросили перевести! Просто с латиницы? :D

Re: Help to translate a few names to Russian
hmm.. don't know why, but I considered that all names were spelled in English language, even though there are not English names.
Hey, Markarios! I am from Saratov

А английское написание имен, которые в оригинале пишутся латиницей, вообще существует? Я слышала, что их пишут "как есть", а носители английского потом пытаются угадать, как это читается (если нет транскрипции и не у кого спросить произношение, а имя не относится к числу известных).

Я ведь не зря выше дала ссылку на тему, в которой англоязычный переводчик просит помочь с переводом имени, встретившегося в англоязычном тексте.

Markarios, please, try to explain us how these names are pronounced if you want to translate names into Russian.

Hm… If you know how loanword is pronounced, you know how it is spelt. It’s really easy, because there is only one way to convey a sound by letters in Russian.

Re: Help to translate a few names into Russian
Wowik has written everything in Russian.
I have a smattering of Russian.
Please translate it into English.
.................................................. .................................................. ...............................................
By the way, today I have talked to a Russian girl whilst training at the gym.
She hastily wrote the following at my behest.
Я тренируюеь спортивном зале.
The above means I train at a gym.
Is it fine?
She said she was born in Kaliningrad

If Eva is from Bible, I would translate as Eва also due to the tradition.

Hmm... But there is a Polish actress known as Эва Шикульска in Russia.

Right!
I think "Ева" is a traditional and "Эва" is a modern way to translate Eva from European languages where Э is prononced.
(Ева Браун, Эва/Ева Перон, ...)
Шикульска - is wrong in Russian. There is clear rule in Russian language for Polish names: It should be Шикульская.
But at present time some people break this rule (e.g. Барбара Брыльска). Also they can use non traditional Эва instead of Ева. I know Ева Шикульская also used in Russian
Initially Е in Old Slavonic sounds as Э. In Russian it was substantially iotacized. Letter Э was invented much later to distinct pronunciation in some cases.
Some linguists say there is no need of letter Э at all. Because almost all cases could be covered by simple rule У should be read iotacized in Russian words and not iotacized in foreign words.
But some foreign words became more Russian and begin pronounce in Russian manner.
50 years ago пиoнер was pronounced as пионэр (while пенсне, декольте, зеро, индекс, коттедж, купе, реквием, темп, шоссе now are pronounced with Э)
100 years ago пэр,сэр,мэр could be written as пер,мер,сер,...

Hmm... зеро and реквием are with е, IMHO.
OMG, our language needs a bit more of order.

Действительно говорят. Я так легко могу сказать.
Мне помнится так в "Маленких трагедиях" по телевизору и говорили.
Люди и [Что] говорят, не говоря уж о булоЧНой. А уж про [доЖЖи] теперь и не услышишь, пожалуй.
