    Grades???

I was talking to my Russian friend, and wanted to ask how her grades came out this semester at school, but I just didn't know how! How do you say "grades" or use it in a sentence like "Did you get good grades this semester?" I looked in the dictionary, but feel just as lost as before.....

what about отметки? That works too, doesn't it?

And by the way, emkalin, when you talk to Europeans, they may sometimes be more familiar with "marks" for "grades."

It does, everyone understands it, but this word (in this meaning) is slightly obsolete.

They also have a different grading system in Europe than they do in the US, don't they? Like, here it goes A, B, C, D, and F. A = 4 points, B = 3 points, etc. How does it work in Europe.

Действительно "оценки" более распространено чем отметки. Отметки в основном говорят пожилые люди.

emka71aln If you can consider Estonia to be a european country (joining the EU only in May) we still have 1, 2,3,4,5 system at schools but A B C D E F in universities, colleges. Одной ногой в Европе, одной ногой в СССР

In England they also use letters (A-F), but I wouldn't know how that works exactly. In Holland we use a scale of 1-10 (most schools skip the 0, so the lowest mark you could get is a 1).

One of the many things wrong with British education is that there is no real consistency as far as grades/marks are concerned. It differs from school to school, university to university.

As far as standardised tests in schools are concerned, assessment grades range from levels 4 - 8 at age 14, A* - F at age 16 and A - E at 18. What do we learn from this:

    too many standardised tests .
    А если отнять еще одну?

You ain't kidding, and just to add to the confusion there's not even such a thing as a 'British education system". There's one system in England and Wales and another, completely unrelated, one in Scotland.

What about 'scores'? And where does Russian system go? Letters or numbers?

And now nobody of teachers uses grade «1». So, in fact the lowest grade is «2». Some years ago I heard that our schools wanted to use ten-degree system. Seems this idea is forgotten by now. But my opinion is that children must not be surrounded by grades until at least 14 years old. I think it brakes eagerness to study.

I never understood why American schools skip E and go straight to F. My (American) school in Germany used E as a grade (instead of F) and everybody said that it made more sense.

I never understood why Americans use letters at all! Numbers are so much clearer and easier to understand. And, importantly, counting average and other statistics is so straightforward...

Some of my teachers in the school used to mark "1" instead of "2" They said, it's easier to change it to "4" when you improved your knowledge

But in universities, there is a 4-grade scale officially, "2" to "5".

I once saw a teacher giving a student a zero, because the student knew zero about a subject. But that's just a teacher's quirk
