From a previous discussion in the forum I understood that we, foreigners, face difficulties in understanding the use of word "destroy"in russian language. Personally in all cases I was using the word разрушать, which as you explain is used just for big constructions (e.g. buildings). For this reason I am seeking all possibles versions:

1. Alcohol destroys liver.
2. European Union policies destroyed the economies of Northern Europe.
3. The car was fully destroyed in the car accident.
4. The rebel forces were destroyed in battle.
5. The new medicine destroyed the spreading virus.
6. The leather strap of the watch can be destroyed by the exposition in hot water.
7. The manuscripts were destroyed when they were exposed to air.
8. Greediness destroy happiness.
9. Smoking destroys health.
10. He had destroyed his back by professional weight-lifting (possible in Greek).
11. The financial crisis destroyed small and middle businesses.

... The list is endless.

1. Alcohol destroys liver. - Алкоголь разрушает печень.
2. European Union policies destroyed the economies of Northern Europe. - Политика Евросоюза навредила экономике стран северной Европы.
3. The car was fully destroyed in the car accident. - Here I would say: Автомобиль был сильно повреждён в результате аварии. (Severely damaged). "Разрушен" does not sound right to me.
4. The rebel forces were destroyed in battle. - Силы повстанцев были уничтожены в бою. (If all the rebels were killed). or: Силы повстанцев были разгромлены в бою. (If they were fully defeated).
5. The new medicine destroyed the spreading virus. - Here I would say: Новое лекарство победило распространяющийся вирус. (It won the spreading virus). or: Новое лекарство остановило распространение вируса. (It stopped the virus spreading).
6. The leather strap of the watch can be destroyed by the exposition in hot water. - Кожаный ремешок часов может быть повреждён в горячей воде.
7. The manuscripts were destroyed when they were exposed to air. - Рукописи были повреждены на открытом воздухе.
8. Greediness destroy happiness. - Жадность разрушает счастье. or Жадность вредит счастью.
9. Smoking destroys health. - Курение вредит здоровью.
10. He had destroyed his back by professional weight-lifting (possible in Greek). - Он повредил спину в результате поднятия тяжестей (Он повредил спину, занимаясь тяжёлой атлетикой).
11. The financial crisis destroyed small and middle businesses. - Финансовый кризис уничтожил малый и средний бизнес. (Completely! They are all bankrupts!) Финансовый кризис навредил малому и среднему бизнесу.

Some conclusions:

уничтожать (impf.) / уничтожить (pf.) - to destroy completely, to exterminate. Something which is "уничтожено" does not exist any longer;
разрушать (impf.) / разрушить (pf.) - to destroy such a way that the object gets disintegrated. To demolish. Something which is "разрушено" is considered to continue existing, but not as a single whole;
повреждать (impf.) / повредить (pf.) - to damage. Something which is "повреждено" still exists as a single whole, but with some damages. This verb is transitive: "повредить спину; повредить механизм".
вредить (impf.) / навредить (pf.) - to harm. This verb is intransitive, it requires dative, and it is mostly used in more abstract sense (not a physical damage): "вредить отношениям; вредить репутации; вредить соседям".

But I understand, sometimes it is hard to decide which word to use for non-native speakers.

To add some alternative variants,

1. Alcohol destroys liver. (Алкоголь разрушает печень – possible to use this word here)
2. European Union policies destroyed the economies of Northern Europe. (Политика ЕС причинила ущерб экономике стран севера Европы – I wouldn’t use разрушать here, as it would sound too strong in Russian)
3. The car was fully destroyed in the car accident. (В результате аварии автомобиль был поврежден и не подлежит восстановлению)
4. The rebel forces were destroyed in battle. (В результате вооруженного столкновения силы повстанцев были уничтожены)
5. The new medicine destroyed the virus. (Новое лекарство уничтожило вирус)
6. The leather strap of the watch can be destroyed by the exposion in hot water. (Кожаный ремешок на часах может быть поврежден от воздействия воды высокой температуры)
7. The manuscripts were destroyed when they were exposed to air. (В результате воздействия воздуха рукописям был нанесён ущерб)
8. Greediness destroys happiness. (Жадность – помеха счастью)
9. Smoking destroys health. (Курение губительно для здоровья)
10. He had destroyed his back by professional weight-lifting (possible in Greek). (Он сильно повредил спину, профессионально занимаясь тяжёлой атлетикой)
11. The financial crisis destroyed small and middle businesses. (Финансовый кризис нанёс большой урон малым и средним предприятиям)

So i use разрушать only in the first sentence (because the liver is physically destroyed)

For the word разрушать, i suggest definitions from Большой современный толковый словарь русского языка. © 2006 (where i added some examples)

1. Ломая, разбивая, разваливать. Превращать в развалины (о каком-либо стихийном бедствии) . Eg, Дом был разрушен в результате урагана.
2. Приводить в полное расстройство; разорять, уничтожать. Приводить в негодность, в упадок. Подрывать чье-либо здоровье. Eg, Система была разрушена лихим албанцем.
3. Препятствовать осуществлению чего-либо; расстраивать. Eg, Придурковатый албанец разрушил все наши радужные мечты.
