Hello i am on vacation. Today i tried to help a russian at the hotel. He had got an issue with his identification card. I tried to tell him in russian but did not know what is that id card that each of us have called in russian. Could you tell me ? thanks..

ID - удостоверение личности. Это может быть паспорт.

Наши люди путешествуют с паспортами, но паспорт - это не card, а целая книжка!

Neither I can understand what kind of card he had...

Arkadasim! Oh, but it's just called ПАСПОРТ. All Russian citizens travelling abroad must have ЗАГРАНИЧНЫЙ ПАСПОРТ (foreign passport). At home in Russia we use Russian passport. The word ID is not used in Russia.

Yes, but again, it does not look like a card then!

all other cards as laminated paper or pass can be called Карточка, Пропуск (=pass) or Удостоверение (which is for officials)

Спасибо большое за ответы. Я думаю у него тоже есть турецкие удостоверение личности. Потому что он тоже турецкий гражданин. Турки также путешетвуют с паспортами и это тоже целая книжка

Я не понял. Русские граждане есть два паспорт ? Один называеться только паспорт (когда путешетвие в иноцтранную страну?) а другой называется заграничный паспорт (когда путешетвие в России?). ?? Что это такое удостоверение личности ? Это один общее имя? И пропуск? Что это ? Картоска? Много имён для passport и id

Нет, всё наоборот

У каждого гражданина России есть паспорт. Это официальный документ внутри страны. Паспорт сейчас получают в 14 лет (раньше - в 16 лет). Он удостоверяет личность гражданина. Паспорт необходим везде: поступить в ВУЗ, устроиться на работу, открыть счёт в банке, получить пенсию, зарегистрироваться по месту жительства, заключить брак и т.д. So, you cannot do anything without a passport: you cannot buy a plane ticket, a train ticket, you cannot vote at the elections, you cannot visit a doctor in many cases etc. etc.

Для путешествия за границу (в другую страну) нужен заграничный паспорт (загранпаспорт). Он есть не у всех. Внутри России он не нужен.

Удостоверение личности - a broader term. It includes passport, but not only. Some officials may have special kinds of "удостоверение личности": military servicemen do not have a passport, they have a "военный билет" instead. Policemen do have a passport, but they also have a policeman certificate, which is also a kind of "удостоверение личности". Some other special categories may have others.

Actually, everyone has a passport except two categories: military servicemen do not have it (as I told, they have "военный билет"), and those who serve their term in prison. After they leave military service, or after they dismissed from prison, they get a passport back.

"Пропуск" is an entrance permission. It can be very different. It is required to enter some facilities with a restricted access. If you work at a factory, you may need "пропуск" to be allowed in. There is no general standard, each facility (enterprise, government building etc.) may issue its own form of "пропуск" with a photo.

"Карточка" just means "a card". It is a very generic term. For example, "кредитная карточка" is "credit card".

Official terms for these 2 Russian documents are: Паспорт гражданина РФ (passport valid inside Russia), Заграничный паспорт (passport that a Russian national must have to travel to other countries, excluding some CIS countries; if a person never travels they don't need заграничный паспорт).

I believe that anyone particularly interested in how a Soviet style удостоверение looks like might ask Deborski to elaborate on that (or if memory serves me well, in one of her blogs there must be a photo of such an удостоверение featuring though a non-smiling and stern, but beautiful face).
