Cat how is this translated please
I know how to speak the word "Cat"in Russian sounds like Koshka but to me "Cat" in Russian is кат but surely this cant be right.. can it ?i-If it isn't then how is it spelt and why? Or is it spelt using the Russian equivalent of Koshka.
Also how is Dog,Lion, and Whale translated .. If you can help I can then try to work out how the word is translated as I know how these words sound.
It seems to me that though you might say Dog in Enghlish and the pronunciation of the Russian word sounds like Sa-(bacha) this with the sound like (baka) the actual Russian witten word is somewhat different.
:D

One could probably give you a couple dozen words, all translated into English as "cat" with sligtly different meanings, and invent just as much. Just as it goes for any noun, especially animate things, and other parts of speach as well to a bit lesser extent. It's one thing that makes Russian so different from English and that is usually lost in translation.

probably you are looking for this one:
http://www.multitran.ru/DownLoad/mtlong.exe
as for the confusion -- English word "cat" does not even distinguish between male and female, young and old cats, and the finer things like the attitude of the speaker, that are also often embedded into the Russian words, have to be translated with extra words too, pretty much always imprecisely. One really needs to learn the language, the way such words are formed and the context the suffixes and prefixes are used in to recognize and understand them properly.
Conversely, some of the word forms you hear might not be even found in dictionaries, or they can be insufficiently described.[/b]

I think I understand the difference now Russian is a bit more complex in that it is more expresive.
