I'm suprised you didn't figure it out on your own. The phrase seems pretty clear, well, at least for me. Anyway,

The phrase means that when people argue about something that often leads to discovering, fiding, figuring etc the truth about what they'd been arguing.

I didn't know the word спор I thought it meant controversy.
But if it is translated as argue it makes sense 100%.
I have some issues with the words:
ругать
ругаться
ругать матом
ругаться матом
спорить
ссориться
I usually confused them

Thought thrives on conflict.

Here conflict (спор) means discussion, discussing aspects and sides of the matter and hopefully, as the saying goes, the truth will be discovered in the end.

ругаться is more like 'scolding', 'arguing in a rude manner', 'openly and loudly express that one is unhappy about something'

to express discontent about someone's actions with words of course. It's a type of a word to convey your strong dissapproval of someone. Like when someone did something stupid or wrong. A good example would be a parent telling off their child for something bad the child had done

ругаться
It has multiple meanings. If you ругаться с кем-то that means that you have a quarrel with someone. Like when people yell at each other, calling one another names, trying to abuse each other with words etc.
Another meaning is to swear like saying the bad words
And the last meaning I can think of right now is to express discontent about something happening, happened. It's like when you drop your phone and start yelling because of that and etc

ругать матом - the same as ругать but it shows that you mostly say swear words while doing that

ругаться матом - the same as ругаться but using mostly swear words

спорить - it's just to argue. It's when two or more people have different opinions about something and they try to make their point about that to prove their opinion right. It can be a pieceful arguing or violent one.

ссориться - it's to lose your friendly (or more than just friendly) relationship with someone because of the words you or both of you had said to each other or because of the actions you or both of you did

Also I want to mind you that the word истина is one of the words that can't be really translated into English

No, it doesn't mean that she hit him. That doesn't even really mean that she yelled or shouted at him. She might have or might have not

If I want to say that: The mother hit her son what verb will I use:
ударять / ударить
or
бить / побить

If she hit him just once you say ударить
If she hit him more than once, like bit him up or pummelled you say бить

Она ударила своего сына - She hit her son (once)
Она била своего сына - She hit her son many times = She pummelled her son
Она побила своего сына - That means that she bit her son

Aslo if you want to say that she gave him spanking you say:

Она отшлёпала своего сына or Она дала ремня своему сыну or Она дала ему по жопе (заднице, попе, пятой точке or any other words that defines a backside )
