I first heard this song when watching "Белое Солнце Пустыни", and since I'm learning guitar I figured it would be a good song for me to learn. Hopefully when I learn to play guitar better, I will post a recording of me singing and playing this song

He's using this "vezet (dat)" to mean "be lucky", right? So does this part mean "I'm not lucky in death, I'll be lucky in love?"

What? "Nine grams in the heart?" What is he talking about here?

Anyone here know how to play the guitar well? Should I tune my guitar to open G(like the Russian guitar) or just keep it as it is? I can play something that sounds similar, but can't really come close...
Does anyone know where I can find more songs by Bulat Okudzhava online to download?

    You are quite right.

You can always try either Kazaa (crapper than crap) or eDonkey (yeah, babier than yeah, baby!). You can find almost anything. It is a bit slow and unreliable, but the choice is amazing.

Now, this is a little different, isn't it?

(I am not going to translate it. Not for you. :P I guess your Russian is good enough to know the difference).

Just keep it as is. BTW, in Russian chords, B chord is very often written as H (and therefore, Hm, H7 etc.), and B actually means Bb (si flat). It is a long story why

Sometimes there are misunderstandings when listening. I remember listening to an old song "Ночной рандеву на бульваре роз" long time ago when I was a child. And I was understanding it as "Ночной Рандеву на бульваре рос" and was wondering who the hell was Рандеву and why he was growing on the boulevard

Errr....yes, why I see the difference Unfortunately, I must admit I'm not too sure about the difference. Here is my guess:

девять граммов в сердце, постой, не зови
nine grams in/to the heart, stop a bit, don't call(command to someone else)

nine grams, heart, stop a bit, don't call(command to his heart)

Of course, even if I'm right, I don't really understand the significance of the changed meaning....

Pravit, I have a songbook printed in 1997 in Moscow and it says:

Девять граммов в сердце постой, не зови...

Meaning "don't call those nine grams (to hit your heart)..." or put it simple
"don't call a bullet to hit your heart...". See now? So не зови is a command to a bullet
    And the chords:

    Am E7 Am

If you're interested in the complete lyrics just email me.

I have this particular song digitized and can upload it here... but how?

I must add that I read "граммов в сердце" loud and clear.

Garfunkel, thanks for the chords! I found the complete lyrics on the internet, thank you. But I am confused on how to play it like he does in the song - it sound like he plays a high note, then strums, then low note, then strums, etc. etc. as opposed to just playing plain chords.

Pravit, do you see those slash-chords like Dm/f? It means they should be played like this: first play bass string with your thumb so that it gives 'f (Fa)' then play chord Dm with your index, middle and ring fingers, plucking three treble strings simultaneously. For performing that press down the fourth string with your ring finger on the third fret (that is 'fa'), then play Dm as usually with your index, middle and pinkie.
Try this chord - Am/E - you should know where which notes are on the guitar fretboard. E means 'mi' and so 6-th string open would give you 'E'.
Pravit, it's difficult to explain without illustrations. Contact me , I've played the guitar for 13 years.
