From the famous book "BabaYaga's Ethymology of the Russian Language" :

селянка : (n. f. decl: ilarw) * :
Soup, only eaten in Russian villages, mainly by peasant women. Contains сельдерей. Was originally supposed to contain сельд, but as most Russian villages are nowhere near the sea, that variant has now been renamed "уишфул-тинкинг".

солянка : (n. f. decl: ilarw) * :
Soup, not eaten by Russian peasant women. Contains more salt than the above and is only eaten in sunny weather.
