Photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) made a survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II.
He used a special camera with red, green, and blue filters, which allowed them to be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns that nearly show their true color.
