    Рига -> Питер

Does anyone have any idea how long it might take to Ride a bus from Riga to SPB? In a straight line its about 300 miles but on the road it will be much more.

And does anyone know where in Riga I can buy these bus tickets?

    (DDT maybe VM knows??)

Wouldn't it be easier to take the train?

I doubt such train exists. Afaik there is no train from Latvia to Estonia,
and the only one from Latvia to Russia is Moscow-Riga.

I didn't know there was one.

Basically I can fly to Riga on Ryanair for like 20 bucks, so I'm just trying to figure out how to get to piter.

Well, maybe there isn't a direct one, sometimes you have to go out of your way a little, take multiple trains/buses, etc. I remember once when I took the train from from Warsaw to Vinnitsa, Ukraine I actually had to buy a ticket to Kiev, and almost double back on another train back West to Vinnitsa. Actually, as it turned out, I got smart, checked the map on the train, got off short of Kiev (in Birdichev) and caught a bus 90 minutes south to Vinnitsa. Saved half a day.

If you can't find direct transport, there's still always a way if you're flexible.

Well it is about a 7 hour bus ride from Helsinki or Talin Estonia to St Petes. I just returned from Finland on a bus.

What so you think rather than getting a bus that goes direct to Saint Petersburg to Riga, it's easier to get 2 or 3 indirect trains at multiple times the cost, time, effort, borders?

Dogboy, I did it the other way, Piter to Riga, it took about 12 hours cost $30 or something. Going from Riga it will cost more, I'm not sure how much. I'm not sure about the time, it might have been less.

Thank you. I might just avoid the whole bus thing because I'm worried they could sell out and have to spend the night in Riga. I'm thinking I might buy tickets in advance for a train to Moscow stay there for a bit then just hit up SPB a few days later from Moscow. But if theres a way I can guarantee myself a seat on a bus then ill probably just do that.

    Thanks all.

No, that's not what I was suggesting at all. I was just saying IF there isn't direct transport, a combination can work, too. Obviously, you wouldn't do it if it cost more in time and money. Sheesh

I'd get a bus. Buses are actually quicker than rail in Russia. Also there are lots of buses that do the Riga - PBer route, so you will manage to find one. Most people don't book tickets in advance for them.

    Рига-Питер

    ТАТУ,

Thanks for the info about coaches between Рига-Питер. Do you know the return cost and how to find out about the times and where they go from in Riga.

Like Dogboy I'm very tempted by the low cost of the airfare between UK and Riga as a way of getting to St P.

    Thanks.
