    White nights - Black days

If Petersburg has 'White Nights' in the summer, there mustn't be many ours of daylight in the winter then?

How short are the days in Peterburg at their shortest (end of December)?

I think it ends up being about 6 hours?

Depends what you define as a 'day', are you talking about how long there is light in the sky or how long the sun is over the horizon?

Even though the sun rises it's overcast 99% of the time. Petersburg has an average of 0 sunlight hours in December and January.

I want to say that around Dec. 20th, the technical "daylight" hours were something like 9:45am-4pm. But like basurero said, the city tends to have lots of cloud cover/precipitation, so actual visibility can be quite a bit less. It can make you kind of lethargic, but it's still a great city.

I agree. I was there for two weeks in Dec, and the feeling was quite strange. But I saw the sun a lot. But people there sleep late in the morning. I think it has to do with the daylight hours. I found myself sleeping until 0930 some mornings, which I normally never do.

Read some Достоевский and you'll get a sense of what that kind of weather does to the human soul.
