    What encoding is this?

I have a piece of Russian text that doesn't show properly because of wrong encoding. Does anybody know how to decipher it?

    UTF-8. Фраза «абстрактом искусстве?» [sic]

I don't know how to help you but there appears to be a fair number of DIFFERENT Russian / Cyrillic encodings. In general with encoding issues it is sometimes just down to the font you use. Also try with a unicode font and switching to unicode encoding.

Another trick is to open the file in MS word and let it auto-detect the encoding.

Dealt with several IT projects involving encoding. Seems like a simple thing, but so much potential for trouble.

I downloaded some Russian music in the autumn. In iTunes all the titles are gargled, just nonsense! I could find no way of fixing it other than manually renaming all the songs (hardly!) or installing iTunes in Russian (haha, no...)

It was SAn who first did it.

Read my first post above and get Штирлиц (it can automatically decode such things). A very useful tool, btw.

It works now! I had this problem on a technical level. I'm converting a database and UTF-8 in the database looks like normal Russian letters "абвгд" but this one does not. I suspect it's not plain UTF-8. It might be the result of using url_decode / url_encode in PHP. Because when I turn off utf_encode and turn on etf_decode, the letters looks fine.
