BTW.. you would never guess that my grandfather owned several liquor stores, would you??? I can't tell one type of spirit from another. Except of course the dead ones.

Rtyom,
I found this recipe online for Russian Yellow Pea Soup (Gorohoviy sup).
http://russian-cookbook.com/2008/08/...gorohoviy-sup/
Was this the type? Because I am used to "green" not "yellow" peas.
Thanks,
Rockzmom.
Re: What to cook to win a man’s heart?
Oh, this can be different with some ingredients, but, yes, it’s “yellow”. And looks yummy. :D

It's yellow because it's dried.

It's just personal preference. All vodkas taste slightly different and there are cheap brands and premium brands, just like with anything else. I prefer Russian Standard Platinum or Grey Goose myself.

Here we have green split dried peas.
We may have yellow as well for all I know. I am not a big split pea person. I might be after I make this :D
I'll have to let you both know how it turns out or maybe I should send the recipe to my dad and ask HIM to make it and see if he likes it as he is the pea soup fan in the family!!

Really? I never noticed.
I haven't even noticed any difference between vodka and samogon.

Hmmmm. My husband is coming home next week ( we've been apart for 3 months) and I am planning a dinner of boiled potatoes, cutleti, cabbage salad, fresh homemade bread, marinated mushrooms and maybe homemade salt pickles. I'll of course have a bottle of Russian vodka in the freezer!

Ah yummie! It is a shame you can't buy them in stores which only carry marinated (i.e. made with vinegar) pickles. Small cucumbers pickled home-style, with herbs and black currant leaves, and with no vinegar, are heaven's delight.
