Oh, it's wonderful that people here can make you feel happy! But what about you in return helping someone here with Russian? This is a Masterrussian forum after all, remember? Or lawyers do not provide help for free, do they?

Legal help is payable. Language help is for free

Do you expect people to contact you directly? You did not have to do it, did you?

You are right, I did not help. And I do not think I will monitor the respective part of the forum.
But anyone is welcome to send me a private message and ask his/her question.
There is free legal help, as usual law student provide it in their universities (it is called pro bono). Practicing lawyers are deprived of doing so due to overloads with payable work that they have to accomplish in short deadlines with long billed hours. I presume the same is in the US.

Fine. It will do. You might want let our people know. There is a separate forum for it: Penpals and Language Exchange

When a person come to a forum he is mostly looking for a specific help that the forum users can provide. If the person were pleased with the help, hospitality and welcoming he eventually would became a virtual friend of this community and provide some help in return. This is a natural way for all the forums to evolve.

But if the person is forced to do something in return even before he had accustomed to the forum's community (and even if there is nobody he can help) it looks really weird like a sect or a closed high school club for self elected. The person would hardly ever be pleased with such a request and think twice is this forum really worth to join it at all.

Especially such a request looks strange from the point of established "democracy", those democracy that "killed" our beloved Оля.

I believe that our forum (as well as any forum) would be more active and positive if it will be considered as a free will community. Even more I would personally prefer if this "free will" would be rather free as "free bear" than "free speech".

I don't think that she's gone because of the forum conflict. Just before leaving she mentioned some disaster in her private life. When such things happen, people usually want to change everything: lifestyle, furniture, hair color, forums, i.e. "to start a new life".

Насколько я помню, Оля регулярно ругалась на форуме с одним из форумчан на несвязанные с русским языком темы, и конфликт принял нешуточные размеры. По-времени это приблизительно совпало с ее уходом с форума. Не пойму, причем тут Лампада.

Вообще, я понимаю ее стремление сделать так, чтобы все оказывали посильный вклад в развитие форума. Но, думаю, все согласятся, что любая помощь - дело сугубо добровольное. Мы не на работе, в конце концов. Тимон, не парься. ))

That is my personal experience. Twice in a life I abandoned all my favorite forums at once and both times it was connected with my private life in reality, not with my forum conflicts (even though there were conflicts sometimes).

Модератор обязан прерывать подобные конфликты, с момента их возниконовения, а не ждать их развития (типа пусть каждый говорит, что хочет).
Бездействие модератора привело к тому, что пользователь, который более всех помогал другим, покинул форум.

Действия же модератора по принуждению к помощи, особенно когда просьб об этой помощи в общем то и нет, только отпугивают новых пользователей от форума.

Мне, кстати, тоже, показалось, что проблема была на форуме.

НО! Если изначально Оля была жертвой, то здесь её практически все осудили (считаю, что справедливо). Во всяком случае, после этой ветки, на форуме она больше не появилась.

Оля действительно помогала в разделах по грамматике намного больше остальных, это было очень заметно. Но при этом она могла ТАК обхамить какого-нибудь новичка за на ровном месте, что мама не горюй. Поэтому не надо выставлять ее беззащитной овцой, которая вынудили покинуть форум какие-то злыдни (злыдень).

К тому же, у нас мягкомодерируемый форум. Соответственно модератор в большинстве случаев выражает свое отношение к происходящему и предлагает скорректировать свое поведение (что и было сделано), а растаскивать драчунов за уши, как в детском саду, никто не обязан. Также никто не обязан и уговаривать пользователей остаться на форуме (хотя и ЭТО было сделано).

ЗЫ. Эх, безумные были времена.
