Thread: Has anyone ever used the pimsleur Russian Guides?

Well have they? I managed to get hold of a copy of all 3 from a mate, and they seem very thorough - not very difficult but thorough. Every word you repeat for like an eternity. Just wondered what other people thought?

I did the 3 levels one year and half ago, when I decided to start learning russian.
Yeah, it seemed good. It helped to start speaking and understanding a little russian.
But it surely isn't good to actually learn russian.
Only now, after 1 year of studying with a textbook (and after being in russia 2 times) I feel like I know russian.

I am fairly pleased with Pimsleur. I have been working my way through it for about 2 or 3 months now. I'm just about halfway through (lesson 15 of Russian II). You're right, you do repeat the words a million times. But those words get locked into your skull, and you remember them forever. Later, when asked to repeat those words again, I find myself just spouting them out without even thinking.

The only problem I've found is that it's kinda slow going. You only learn 4-5 new words each lesson. Like I said, when you learn them, you really learn them. But as somebody here told me, there would need to be about 50 more levels of Russian, instead of just 3, to really learn the language. But it's a fine place to start, if you ask me.

It's worth using if you can get it from a library or a friend, but I wouldn't pay $300 a level for it. Kinda pricy.

I dont pay for software as a rule of thumb. I can useually either *cough* download, borrow or rent from a library. In this case my friend has been particularly helpful!
